ASTRO is a wall light built from two discs. A transparent disc 28 cm across lies against the wall, and a black steel disc 10 cm across stands in front of it on a central body. The LED module sits in the gap between them, so it throws light sideways, onto the transparent disc and the wall around it. How much wall it takes up The disc measures 28 cm across and the fitting stands 8.5 cm off the wall — a figure to compare with the width of the passage along that wall and with the clearance to a door frame or a corner. It weighs 0.5 kg. Mounting is on the surface and permanent: a bar is screwed to the wall on two plugs, the fitting is hung on it and locked with a screw from below. The wires go into two connectors marked N and L — the manufacturer's sheet provides no earth terminal, so the circuit is switched off first and the connection is an electrician's job. What kind of light it gives The module draws 7.5 W and gives 1070 lumens, appreciably more than an old 60 W incandescent bulb. 3000 K is warm white, close to the light of a traditional bulb. Because the diode sits in the gap between the discs, a bright ring appears on the wall while the front disc stays dark — the fitting lights the wall rather than the room. The source is built in and supplied with the fitting, so there is no bulb to buy or change. The transparent disc lets the wall colour show through it even when the light is off, and the fitting is intended for dry indoor rooms. Where it comes from and where it fits ASTRO was designed by Marta Foit and the design was recognised in the PROJEKT MŁODE ŚWIATŁO programme run with the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. The body is steel and the disc is acrylic, and production is in Poland; the manufacturer gives a five-year warranty. The manufacturer intends the model for the living room, the bedroom and the corridor — hung on its own, or rhythmically, several pieces side by side on one wall.
