PALINZA is a pendant lamp whose shade is an irregular, flattened oval — a form closer to a pebble than to a sphere. The surface is matt and coarsely grained in a brown tone, and the lower rim is not level: on one side it drops low, on the other it rises in a wave that exposes the lighter interior. The shade is cast from polyurethane and resin. How much room it takes below the ceiling The shade measures 50 cm at its widest and 40 cm across, and stands 29 cm tall. The oval is not symmetrical, so the lamp looks different from every side — a figure to weigh against the direction it will usually be seen from, not only against the width of a table. The ceiling cup is 12 cm across and 2.5 cm deep, so it covers an ordinary ceiling box. The suspension is long: the maker allows a drop of over two metres from ceiling to the lower rim, which has to be set against the height of the surface it will hang over. A 50 cm shade keeps its proportions above a table 80 to 90 cm wide, and the rim is usually set 70 to 80 cm above the top. Which lamp to buy for it There is one E27 socket and the maker caps the lamp at 12 W. That ceiling is set for LED sources — an ordinary 40 or 60 W bulb does not fit under it. No lamp is supplied, so the colour and the brightness are yours to choose; over a table, 2700 to 3000 K, warm light, is the usual pick. The inside of the shade is lighter than the outside and throws the light downwards onto the surface below. The shade itself is opaque, and the waving rim lets some light out sideways — least of it towards the side where the rim drops lowest. Where it fits The soft organic body and the raw, sandy texture put this lamp closer to stone than to metal, so it sits well with wood, linen and plaster.
