Alton is a wall light with an oval backplate and an arm of satin chrome curved in an arc, ending in a bowl of matt opal glass that opens upwards. A pull cord hangs beneath the arm. The metal is satin, the glass white and opaque. How much wall it takes up The fitting is 18 cm tall and 12.5 cm wide, and it stands 18.5 cm off the wall — further than it is wide, because the arm sweeps forward in a curve. That is the figure to compare with the width of the walkway where it is going. The light weighs 0.4 kg, so the load on the wall is slight, and the oval backplate covers the fixing point. The bowl faces upwards, so the light goes to the ceiling and comes back into the room reflected — this is secondary lighting, not a reading spot. What bulb it needs The fitting has a single E14 socket, for which the manufacturer gives a maximum of 7 W with an LED lamp. No bulb is included, so the colour and brightness of the light are your own choice. Endon names an E14 LED golf-ball lamp as the matching source — small and round, so it sits inside the bowl of the shade. The glass is matt and opaque, so the envelope stays hidden anyway and only its size matters. The switch on the fitting, and dimming The wall light has its own pull-cord switch hanging within easy reach just below the arm. It can therefore be turned on and off without going to the wall switch, which counts beside a bed or an armchair. The manufacturer lists the fitting as dimmable, but the light has no control of its own — dimming needs an E14 lamp marked as dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit. How it is built and installed The body is steel with a satin chrome finish and the shade is opal glass.
