The Harper HK-HARPER-F-CM is a flush ceiling light shaped as a shallow drum 40 cm across. The rim and the three struts that cross beneath it are steel in polished chrome, and the band of the shade is white etched opal glass. The struts end in knurled knobs on the outside. How much room it takes under the ceiling The fitting sits against the ceiling and drops only 15.9 cm, so it fits where a pendant would take away too much height. The 40 cm diameter is the figure to compare with the width of the spot it will cover - over a bed, over a table, or in the middle of a room. The light itself weighs 3.67 kg, the box 4.79 kg at 44.1 × 44.1 × 30.2 cm. The ceiling pan is chromed like the rim and stays visible after mounting. The fitting is Class I, so it needs an earth connection and must not be installed on wiring without one. Which bulbs you have to buy Three E27 sockets sit under the shade, and the maker allows a bulb of up to 60 W in each of them. No lamps are included, so you buy three separately and choose the colour and brightness yourself. Three bulbs of roughly 800 lm each add up to about as much light as three old 60 W incandescent bulbs. The etched opal glass is milky: it hides the bulbs and spreads the light instead of throwing it in a beam. The fitting itself is not dimmable - the maker describes it as compatible with dimmable lamps, so regulating it takes both such bulbs and a dimmer in the circuit. In the range the fitting is listed for the bedroom and the dining room, where it works as general light diffused right under the ceiling. In style Harper sits between retro and a classic restated in present-day terms: a plain cylinder, no ornament beyond the knobs, one continuous chrome gloss and the white of the glass.
