The Steinel RS 16 S PMMA, also sold as RS 16 LED, is a surface-mounted LED luminaire with a built-in motion sensor. It is a flat round cover of white opal plastic, 27.6 cm across and 10.5 cm deep. The sensor sits under the cover, so from the outside the fitting looks like an ordinary ceiling light. Where it goes The luminaire mounts on the surface of a wall or a ceiling, up to a maximum mounting height of 4 m. Above that the detection field no longer covers the area it was calculated for. The 27.6 cm circle is the figure to compare with the space between the back box and a door frame or a cupboard; at 0.4 kg it holds on ordinary fixings. How the sensor works A high-frequency sensor at 5.8 GHz covers 360° with a reach of Ø 8 m — roughly 50 m² of floor. The waves pass through glass, wood and lightweight partitions, so it can react to movement behind a wall; worth testing if you mount it beside a door. The twilight threshold is adjustable from 2 to 2000 lx and the on-time from 5 seconds to 15 minutes, both set with potentiometers inside the fitting. There is no remote control, in the box or as an accessory. A basic-light function keeps it at 10% output after switch-off, for 10 or 30 minutes or all night, and continuous light can be switched on permanently. How much light it gives The luminaire puts out 958 lm for 9.5 W, roughly what an old 75 W incandescent bulb gave. 4000 K is neutral white — light with no yellow cast, which reads well in a utility room or a stairwell. Outside operation the sensor draws 0.38 W. The LED module is built in permanently and cannot be replaced, so the life of the diodes is the life of the whole fitting. The light source is included. Build and wiring Housing and cover are UV-resistant white plastic. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the fitting may hang in a bathroom outside the shower zone. Impact resistance is IK03 and the ambient range runs from -10 to +40 °C. Supply is 220–240 V at 50–60 Hz, and protection class II means no earth conductor is needed.
