Velo is a table lamp in smoked glass set on a flat black metal base. The glass body is Ø 20 cm with a squat, slightly barrel-shaped form, and its surface is cut in vertical flutes that break the light into narrow bands. The glass is shaped by hand, so the pattern of the flutes differs from piece to piece. How large it is and where it stands The lamp is 23 cm tall with a 20 cm glass diameter, and the base occupies a circle 18 cm across and 3.5 cm high. Those are measurements to lay against the depth of your own sideboard, console or bedside table — the body is low and wide, so it wants room in depth rather than height. The manufacturer sells Velo in three sizes, and the three glass bodies are not enlargements of one another: the Ø 18 cm version is 36 cm tall, this Ø 20 cm one is 23 cm, and the Ø 25 cm one is 30 cm. The smallest diameter gives the tallest lamp — worth checking before standing several side by side. Bulb and control The socket takes one E27 bulb up to 40 W, and none is supplied, so the colour and brightness are yours to choose. The glass is open top and bottom and the vertical flutes let you see inside the body — the bulb is on show here rather than hidden, and a decorative filament bulb changes the look more than it would inside an opaque shade. A hand switch sits on the cable, so the lamp is switched at the lamp, without reaching for the socket or a wall switch. The black textile cable is 175 cm — that is the reach from the outlet. The manufacturer states dimming as possible only through a suitable bulb: the lamp itself has a plain switch, not a dimmer. Glass and base The smoked tint passes less light than the clear version and damps the glare of the bulb, so the lit lamp reads darker and more restrained.
