The GERDA WIDOW 11395-79 is a five-light ceiling fitting in which five smoked glass globes hang on rigid black rods of differing lengths from a square canopy of solid oiled oak. The globes are translucent and lightly tinted, so the bulb inside stays visible through them. How much room it takes under the ceiling The fitting is 59.5 cm tall on a 37 × 37 cm footprint. Those 59.5 cm are a real drop below the ceiling, because the globes hang on fixed-length rods that cannot be shortened — a figure worth subtracting from the room height before the light goes over a walkway. Above a dining table with a 75 cm top, the lowest globe then finishes well clear of the heads of anyone seated. The 37 cm canopy covers a standard installation box. The fitting weighs 2.41 kg, so in a plasterboard ceiling the fixing has to reach the supporting structure rather than the board alone. Which bulbs to buy The five lampholders take an E14 thread and accept bulbs of up to 25 W each, which the manufacturer states together as 125 W. No bulbs are supplied, so colour and brightness are yours to choose, and across five light points even a modest individual wattage adds up to enough light for a whole room. The smoked glass does not conceal the inside of the globe, so the shape of the bulb shows. Decorative sources with a legible shape suit the fitting — filament bulbs, for instance — and a plain frosted envelope will be just as visible. Tinted glass passes less light than clear glass, so the effect is soft and directional. Dimming depends entirely on the bulb and dimmer you buy; the fitting carries no control gear of its own. What it is made of and where it can hang The canopy is solid oak finished with oil, the rods and lampholders are black metal, and the globes are smoked glass.
