The Enterobacteriaceae tube detection system for the Soleris® instrument consists of a peptone-yeast extract base utilizing lactose as a carbon source. The selective agents include bile salts, sodium lauryl sulfate, and other Gram-positive inhibitors. Acidification of the medium—driven by the metabolism of dextrose or lactose—results in a change in pH. Bromcresol purple (BCP) is employed as the pH indicator. As Enterobacteriaceae metabolize the substrates and produce acid, the color of the BCP indicator shifts from purple to yellow.
