Alton 1805-5SC is a five-arm ceiling pendant finished in satin chrome, with five shades of matt opal glass. The arms curve outwards, the shades face upwards, and the whole fitting hangs from a chain with a chromed ceiling rose. The model belongs to the Alton range. How big it is and how high it hangs The shades span 46 cm across, and overall height falls between 31 and 63.5 cm because the chain can be shortened. Over a table 80–90 cm wide that diameter keeps its proportions, but even at the longest drop the fitting hangs high above the top — this is room lighting, not concentrated light over a table. The manufacturer allows a second way of fitting it: the pendant converts to a semi-flush version mounted close under the ceiling, which solves low rooms. It weighs 2 kg, so a plasterboard ceiling needs a fixing into the supporting structure. Which bulbs you need to buy There are five E14 lampholders, each for a lamp of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included, so colour and brightness are yours to choose. The manufacturer points to an E14 LED filament golf lamp — the small round shape sits inside the shade without reaching past its rim. The fitting is dimmable, but that needs lamps marked as dimmable plus a dimmer: the fitting itself carries no control electronics. How it spreads light and how it is wired The opal glass is matt and the shades point up: part of the light goes to the ceiling and returns reflected, part passes through the glass itself. The result is diffuse general light without hard shadows, spread by five points across the full 46 cm, rather than a beam aimed straight down. The fitting is class I, so it needs an earth conductor — on an installation without one, the fitting should be checked with an electrician first.
