Chance is a pendant light with a drum shade shaped like a four-leaf clover, designed by Hinkley and sold in Europe under the Quintiesse label of the Elstead Lighting group. The steel body is finished in blackened brass — a dark, almost black metal with a brushed, horizontal grain. A panel of matt opal glass with a scalloped edge closes the shade underneath, and the whole fitting hangs from three chains gathered into a ring below a round ceiling plate. How big it is and how low it hangs The shade measures 559 mm across, and the fitting including its three support chains is 673 mm tall. Compare the diameter with the width of your table or the free space beneath: over a table, the lower edge of the shade usually hangs 70–80 cm above the top so the light stays out of seated people's eyes. The overall height from ceiling to lower edge can be set between 773 and 2297 mm. The shortest drop leaves the greatest clearance beneath the lamp, not the smallest. Compare the selected drop with your ceiling height and the position of the shade; a walkway needs a different clearance from a position over a table. Which bulbs you need to buy There are three E27 sockets, each rated for a bulb of up to 100 W. Light sources are not included. Choose brightness and colour temperature to suit the intended use: an E27 base alone does not specify either light output or light colour. The wattage limit applies to each bulb separately, rather than to the fitting as a whole. The metal shade walls are opaque, while the lower opal-glass panel diffuses light passing through it. The manufacturer confirms compatibility with dimmable bulbs; adjustment requires suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer. The fitting operates on 220–240 V and is Class I, so it requires a protective-earth connection. Build and intended use The shade is made of four curved steel segments separated by vertical ribs and held together by bands with visible rivets. The bottom glass is matt, so the bulbs are not visible through it. The manufacturer describes the style as transitional: a classic clover outline combined with plain rivets and chain. This is an indoor fitting. Its drum shade, lower diffuser and adjustable drop make it a candidate for a dining table, living room or bedroom where the ceiling height allows sufficient clearance. The dark finish, riveted bands and symmetrical outline pair a classical form with restrained detailing. The manufacturer provides a two-year guarantee.
